Short Books to Take You Out of a Reading Slump
10 short books from every genre to get you out of a reading slump
I don’t know about you, but I’ve been in a sort of reading slump this month. The perfect book to get you back into reading is short, fast paced, and full of excitement. Here are my recommendations.
If you want a fast-paced YA fantasy:
(The Queen's Thief #1) The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner
Now, I know this is technically a series, but I would argue it can be read as a standalone. Featuring a thief that is sure to steal your heart by the end.
House of Hollow by Krystal Sutherland
Cannot rage on about how good this book is. There’s a lot of magic and mystery, a real page turner.
(Wayward Children #4) In an Absent Dream by Seanan McGuire
This one isn’t as fast paced, but it’s cozy, so you might find your next comfort series.
Moving on to, if you want a comfort book:
Holes by Louis Sachar
It’s a childhood classic for a reason. Really short chapters with a quick fun story. Plus the movie’s pretty good too.
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
It’s the cute and innocent instead of annoying kind of juvenile romance. Follows two characters realizing their first impressions might be wrong about each other. Aaand there’s a movie if you want to watch something afterwards.
Maybe you want a mystery to keep the pages turning?:
The Thin Man by Dashiell Hammett
A charming mystery following a retired detective and his wife.
And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
I mean…it’s Agatha Christie. A lot of plot twists and just a lovely book
Try Something…Weird, Different, Completely Unique..:
Butter by Erin Jade Lange
It’s about a depressed obese boy who decides to announce he will be eating himself to death on livestream, see what gets him to that point and how it will end for him. For something so dark, it was surprisingly wholesome at points.
Midwinterblood by Marcus Sedgwick
Trust me, you’ve never read anything like this. Really explores the meaning of soulmates.
Chess Story by Stefan Zweig
Had to sneak a classic in, really short and interesting. Captures trauma really well.
